Therion era conocida como una banda de death metal, pero su estilo se desarrolló a lo largo de los años (empezando con Of Darkness... en 1991) hasta llegar a ser un grupo de avant-garde metal para un fuerte sector de la audiencia underground. Su tercer y cuarto disco fueron extremadamente experimentales y hubo varios cambios de miembros en la formación. El fundador de la banda, Christofer Johnsson, es el único que ha permanecido en el grupo desde la formación original y de hecho, es quien escribe la mayoría del material de las canciones.

En 1996, la banda entrega su quinto álbum, Theli (dragón en griego), que suele ser considerado como el punto de inflexión en la discografía del grupo. El estilo en Theli viró hacia el metal sinfónico, aunando también otras influencias, que abarcan el rock progresivo de los 70, el heavy metal de los 80 (en especial Accept), música oriental, etc.

Los problemas entre miembros continuaron y el siguiente disco, Vovin (dragón en henochiano y mejor disco en ventas en Europa de la banda, con más de 125.000 unidades vendidas), fue grabado como un trabajo en solitario de Johnsson pero aún bajo el nombre Therion. Ésta fue la primera grabación que incluía una orquesta real y con las grabaciones de Deggial y Secrets of the runes. La banda creó un híbrido total entre la música el heavy metal, la ópera y la música clásica. Deggial . Además es el álbum de la banda que más se acerca a la música clásica de toda su discografía (su producción costó unos 115.000 marcos alemanes de la época y requirió tres meses de estudio): lo certifican canciones como Eternal return o The Flight of the Lord of the Flies, o la versión de "O Fortuna" (Carmina Burana) de Carl Orff.

En el 2002, la banda celebra su quince aniversario con la publicación del doble cd en directo titulado 'Live in Midgard', que repasa su trayectoria hasta ese momento.

En los siguientes álbumes gemelos Lemuria Sirius B (2004), la banda lleva la tendencia sinfónica aún más lejos, hasta el punto de que participan en la grabación de las partes sinfónicas 171 músicos y cantantes, pero el barroquismo compositivo de discos como Deggial no es tan acentuado.

Therion es considerado como el principal responsable de la gran corriente de bandas sinfónicas que irrumpieron en los 90 con cantantes femeninas y teclados como Haggard, Nightwish, After Forever, Epica y Within Temptation. Además, hay que destacar la temática de las letras de Thomas Karlsson (que desde los inicios de la banda ha escrito casi todas), que hablan frecuentemente de mitología (nórdica en muchas ocasiones, pero también clásica),y filosofía.

En 2006, para celebrar sus 20 años en la escena musical, Therion saca a la venta el DVD Celebrators of Becoming-Live In México, un total de 4 DVD que recoge un amplio resumen de su carrera, sus videoclips, escenas de actuaciones por Europa y América, así como su concierto de 2004 en la Ciudad de México, audio al que también pertenecen los dos CD.

En enero de 2007 publican su último disco en formato doble titulado Gothic Kabbalah. Este disco corresponde en su mayoría al material compuesto antes del lanzamiento del álbum conceptual Secret Of The Runes. Durante la actual gira de su último disco Gothic Kabbalah, Mats Leven -una de las primeras voces de la banda- anunció su partida en junio próximo, debido a su inconformismo de realizar principalmente voces de fondo; ésta es una gran pérdida para el grupo, debido a que Mats Leven es una de las figuras más importantes del metal por sus colaboraciones en diversas bandas, además ha realizado una impecable interpretación de Son of the Staves of Time.
En el 2008 editaron Live Gothic, recital grabado en Varsovia, Polonia, el 14 de febrero de 2007 y es editado el 5 de julio de 2008 bajo el sello Nuclear Blast Records.
