El Power Metal es un subgénero del heavy metal derivado del speed metal creado en Alemania. Como casi todos los subgéneros del heavy metal, el power metal es difícil de caracterizar. El power metal está dividido en varios subgéneros, pero se reconoce que hay dos grandes vertientes o variantes del mismo: la vertiente europea y la estadounidense. Se caracteriza por tener un sonido rápido, pero en vez de ser agresivo (como en el thrash metal), este tiene un enfoque más melódico, centrándose más en los temas ficticios o épicos, dando como resultado la creación de un estilo musical más optimista.

La canción del año 1976 del grupo Rainbow "Stargazer" es considerada una de las primeras canciones de power metal. Como precursor de este género podemos mencionar, Además, la banda británica de rock clásico Queen, con canciones como "The Prophet's Song" del álbum A Night at the Opera (1975), son comúnmente citados como influencias del género. El nombre de este último disco sería más adelante utilizado por Blind Guardian (a modo de homenaje) en uno de sus mejores trabajos
